Tokyo 2020 PollWSF Logo Small

Inside the Games, an important 'Olympic' website is conducting a poll for which sports should be added to the Olympic programme at Tokyo 2020.

IOC adopted a series of recommendations last month and two of them have a very positive impact on the World Squash Federations efforts to achieve a place on the Olympic Games programme. The programme will not be limited to a maximum of 28 Sports; instead the determining factors will be a cap of around 10,500 athletes and 310 events. This provides the flexibility to remove some disciplines in existing sports and add new sports such as Squash.

Equally important is the agreement that sports do not need to be fixed seven years in advance of the Games and that the IOC Executive Board can make recommendations. Taken together, this is another real step forward for Squash as it paves the way for change.

That change may come very soon as Tokyo, the hosts for 2020 have been given the opportunity to propose sports for the IOC to consider. President Ramachandran is pushing hard with high level liaison with the IOC and 2020 hosts ongoing.
