2017 Trans-Tasman Results and Oceania Junior Championship PhotosOceania 210

The Executive Travel Trans-Tasman Junior New Zealand Test Team have made it 3 in a row with a second day win of 13-5 at the Trans-Tasman Test Series held at the Henderson Squash Club.

First up today it was the Under 13 Boys and Australia looked set to get themselves off to a good start with Oscar Curtis and Dylan Classen claiming both their matches. The kiwis Mason Smales and Apa Fatialofa didn’t make it easy for them with Smales taking Curtis to 4 and Fatialofa taking Classen to an exciting 5 setter. Australia took the lead 2-0 over New Zealand

The Under 13 Girls were next on with New Zealand getting their first runs on the board with Natalie Sayes and Sophie Hodges both claiming their wins over Erin Classen and Maggie Goodman in 3 respectively. This levelled the series score up 2-2.

The Under 15 Boys were on next and Leo Fatialofa from New Zealand took his win in four from Remi Young with Young putting everything on the line in his match. Elijah Thomas of New Zealand and Josh Penfold of Australia had a mammoth battle with the match going to five and the final game keeping everyone on the edge of their seat. It was Thomas though that was able to get across the line in five and take New Zealand out to the lead 4-2.

After a strong performance in the Girls Under 15 the day before Australia was looking to make it 2 days in a row with clean sweeps but Georgia Fyfe of New Zealand threw a spanner in the works when she took out Katie Davies of Australia in 3. Renee Dudson wasn’t able to do the same unfortunately and she went down to Australia’s Hayley Hankinson in 3. The series score going to 5-3 to New Zealand.

The Under 17 Boys were up next and whilst there were some long rallies it was New Zealand who were able to take the win with Matthew Lucente and Gabe Yam taking their wins over Jacob Ford and Maaz Khatri of Australia in 3 respectively. This took New Zealand out to a 7-3 score needing only 3 more matches to win the second day.

The Under 17 Girls saw Rhiarne Taiapa of New Zealand take on Australia’s Alex Haydon. Haydon showed her strength and accuracy and whilst Taiapa was able to match it at points Haydon took the win in 3. Winona-Jo Joyce of New Zealand took on Jade Woods and made sure to keep New Zealand on the homeward track taking her win in 3. The series score going to 8-4 after the Under 17 Girls with New Zealand in the lead.

The Under 19 Boys saw New Zealand’s Finn Trimble get New Zealand to the half way mark with a win in 3 over Australia’s Nicholas Calvert. New Zealand’s Mitchell Kempton and Australia’s Lachlan Coxsedge had a rematch of their quarter final game in the Oceania Junior Championships and this time Coxsedge was on the winning side after saving 4 match balls in the third to come back and win in 5. The series score went to 9-5 to New Zealand.

The Series would all come down to the Under 19 Girls and first on was Kaitlyn Watts and Courtney Mather. Watts showed her professionalism and took her win from Mather in a strong 3 claiming the title for New Zealand. New Zealand’s Anika Jackson looked to extend New Zealand’s lead and her 3-0 performance over Australia’ Shehana Vithana did just that. Nadia Hubbard of New Zealand and Grace Pattison of Australia had a great four setter but it was Hubbard who managed to extend New Zealand’s lead. Courtney Trail took the last win of the night for New Zealand against Australia’s Taylor Jones winning her match in 3 and making the final score of the day 13-5 and the overall score over the 2 days 26-10.

A big thank you to the Henderson Squash Club who have hosted 6 days of excellent squash and to all of the players, supporters and volunteers who have made it a memorable event.
